Outstanding Innovation Award

Travis Bloomquist
Iowa Valley Community College District

“Travis Bloomquist transformed IVCCD’s paper-heavy dual-credit registration process by creating the Dual Credit Portal, a secure online system that now supports 17 high school partners. The DCP brings registrations, drops, withdrawals, communications and student information into one place, reducing paper, staff time, errors, late registrations, billing corrections and processing time. Today, dual-credit students represent more than half of the student population at Marshalltown Community College, and IVCCD saw an additional 1,000 dual-credit hours in one fall semester. Travis continues to improve the system through DCP 2.0, which is currently in beta and includes expanded reporting, faster performance and additional tools for high school counselors. A batch enrollment process is also being piloted with a local high school. What started as a solution to a cumbersome paper process has become an essential tool for managing one of IVCCD’s largest and most important areas of enrollment.”

Outstanding Alumni Award

Kai Saengthammavong
Western Iowa Tech Community College

“Kai’s journey embodies the transformative power of community college education. Since graduating with honors from WITCC in 2001, he has turned perseverance into purpose and opportunity into service. A nontraditional, multilingual learner, who survived a civil war, living in refugee camps, navigating a new country, and finding his place in a new community, Kai overcame extraordinary challenges to become a successful entrepreneur and trusted community leader. Through Kai Thai Food Truck and Kai Renovations, Kai has created jobs, trained and employed WITCC alumni, supported area schools and businesses, and remained connected to the College. His leadership extends throughout the community through sports sponsorships, back-to-school initiatives, and teacher and first responder recognition. Kai’s journey exemplifies what happens when education meets opportunity—and when that opportunity is multiplied through service to others. WITCC helped provide Kai with a pathway forward, and Kai has spent the 25 years since creating pathways for others.”

Outstanding Business & Industry Partner Award

Greater Dubuque Development Corporation
Northeast Iowa Community College

“For nearly 15 years, Greater Dubuque Development Corporation (GDDC) and Northeast Iowa Community College have worked together to strengthen students, employers and the Dubuque-region workforce. Since 2012, GDDC has invested more than $2 million in the partnership, including $1.57 million in tuition assistance for short-term training and nearly $490,000 in career coach support. In 2023, when NICC asked GDDC to double its investment, the organization did exactly that. GDDC’s commitment extends far beyond funding. Staff meet monthly with NICC workforce leaders to discuss employer needs and strategy, assist with instructor recruitment, connect NICC with area businesses, promote workforce training and advocate for community college workforce initiatives. GDDC also helps welcome NICC students to the region through community information and activities. This sustained investment and collaboration demonstrates what is possible when education and economic development work together with a shared commitment to students, employers and community prosperity.”

Des Moines Area Community College

Outstanding Faculty Award: Colin Hogan

“I am pleased to nominate Colin Hogan for the Outstanding Faculty Award. Since joining DMACC as a full-time faculty member in 2022, Colin has quickly established himself as an exceptional educator whose impact extends well beyond the classroom. He consistently receives outstanding student feedback that highlights his engaging teaching style, meaningful relationships with students, detailed and constructive feedback, commitment to student success, and ability to create an inclusive and supportive learning environment. These comments reflect his significant influence on student learning, persistence, and engagement.

Colin is also a campus leader in artificial intelligence education. He has developed AI-related resources for faculty, led professional development workshops and book studies, presented at major college events, and helped faculty navigate the ethical and instructional implications of AI. This year, he launched a new course, Foundations of AI Literacy, designed to help students develop critical AI knowledge and responsible use practices. His work has strengthened AI literacy and innovation across the DMACC community.

Beyond his teaching, Colin demonstrates a strong commitment to professional growth and service. He serves on AI-related committees, mentors new faculty and adjuncts, contributes to faculty development initiatives, served as course lead for ENG 106 Composition II, participated in the 2026 London Study Abroad program, and supports the college through hiring committees and other service activities.

In summary, Colin Hogan exemplifies the qualities of an outstanding faculty member through his exceptional teaching, innovative leadership in AI education, dedication to student success, and commitment to continuous improvement and service. He is highly deserving of the Outstanding Faculty Award.”

Outstanding Staff Award: Corey Trader

“There is no shortage of people who cite something Corey has done to make their day better or their lives easier. No project is too big or too terrifying to scare him off, and some of our most complicated and significant innovations and advancements are because of Corey’s dedication to his work and to his DMACC community.

Corey is the kind of person who challenges us every day to go farther and keep improving in how we serve our students. He doesn’t do this through force or persuasion, though. He models this every day in his own service and the work he does to support everyone around him. Whether he’s building communication systems and plans that raise the bar on how we communicate with students (and can track and measure those communications) or pushing us forward in our scheduling systems alongside the team to help us deliver a consistent, effective, and easy scheduling experience for students districtwide, so many of us are continually benefitting from Corey’s impact every day. He steps up to challenges, even the really big ones, and he does it with calm, grace, and positivity that’s infectious. For these reasons and many, many more, we’re honored to celebrate Corey and his service to the DMACC community.”

Eastern Iowa Community College

Outstanding Faculty Award: Dr. Amy Foley

“Eastern Iowa Community Colleges is proud to nominate Amy Foley, Professor of English, for Faculty Member of the Year in recognition of her exceptional commitment to teaching, student learning, professional excellence, and service to the college community. Amy is a Distinguished Faculty member, NISOD Excellence Award recipient, published author, and respected faculty leader whose impact extends well beyond the classroom.

At the heart of Amy’s work is a deep commitment to teaching and student success. She is a highly reflective instructor who continually evaluates and refines her courses to improve student learning and engagement. Over the past several years, she has taught new courses and invested significant time and energy into developing, revising, and strengthening them. She approaches course design thoughtfully, considering not only what students should learn but also how they learn best.

Classroom observations consistently reveal learning environments that are both carefully planned and highly engaging. Amy creates opportunities for students to actively participate, contribute their own ideas, and reflect on their learning. Her classes are structured and intentional while remaining flexible enough to encourage meaningful discussion and exploration. Students are not passive recipients of information; they are active participants in the learning process.

A hallmark of Amy’s teaching is her willingness to listen to students and use their feedback to improve. Rather than relying solely on traditional course evaluations, she actively seeks student input throughout the semester and incorporates what she learns into future iterations of her courses. This commitment to continuous improvement reflects both humility and professionalism and demonstrates her belief that effective teaching is an ongoing process rather than a finished product.

Amy’s dedication to excellence extends beyond the classroom through an extraordinary commitment to professional development and scholarship. She has participated in conferences and professional organizations including WAY UP, SXSW EDU, TYCA Midwest, and NISOD. She has presented scholarly work at professional conferences, contributed publications to her field, and shared her expertise with colleagues through professional development opportunities. Her commitment to lifelong learning strengthens both her teaching and the broader academic community.

Amy understands the importance of shared governance and collective progress. She is willing to ask difficult questions, offer alternative perspectives, and advocate for what she believes will best serve students and the institution. At the same time, she recognizes that meaningful progress requires collaboration and commitment. Once decisions have been made, Amy focuses her energy on helping move the institution forward, contributing her expertise and thoughtful perspective to important institutional initiatives, including efforts to revise the college’s mission and help shape its future. Her ability to balance honest dialogue with a commitment to organizational success has made her a trusted colleague, respected faculty leader, and valued contributor to the college community.

Amy exemplifies the qualities community colleges value most: excellence in teaching, dedication to students, professional engagement, collaborative leadership, and a commitment to continuous improvement. Her impact reaches far beyond the classroom, strengthening students, colleagues, and the institution as a whole. For these reasons, Eastern Iowa Community Colleges is honored to nominate Amy Foley for Faculty Member of the Year.”

Outstanding Staff Award: Brandon Lange

“Eastern Iowa Community Colleges is proud to nominate Brandon Lange for Outstanding Staff Member of the Year in recognition of his extraordinary commitment to students, faculty, and the quality of the college’s online learning environment.

Over the past several years, Brandon has been a driving force behind EICC’s efforts to strengthen the technology and systems that support teaching and learning. When EICC adopted Akademos as its bookstore model, the first semester brought significant challenges. Textbooks were not always properly connected to courses, digital access codes failed to work as expected, and students and faculty sometimes lacked the materials they needed when classes began. Brandon did not simply identify the problems or pass them along. He jumped in and took ownership of the situation, working evenings and weekends to troubleshoot issues, support faculty, help students gain access to course materials, and coordinate directly with Akademos and its vendors to resolve problems. More importantly, he worked to strengthen integrations, eliminate recurring issues, and develop more reliable processes for future semesters.

That same commitment proved invaluable in 2026 when EICC made the significant decision to leave the Iowa Community College Online Consortium and establish its own Canvas learning environment. With contracts finalized in early summer and the fall semester quickly approaching, Brandon led an enormous operational effort. He coordinated course migrations, managed contracts and integrations, collaborated with vendors and college departments, helped establish standards for EICC’s new Canvas environment, supported faculty through the transition, and prepared the system for fall while continuing to support summer courses already in progress.

Brandon is relentlessly persistent in the best possible way. When he encounters a problem, he works until he understands not only how to solve the immediate issue, but how to prevent it from happening again. He does not settle for temporary workarounds when sustainable solutions are possible. Instead, he asks questions, tests options, follows up, and continuously improves processes for the people who depend on them.

What distinguishes Brandon as an outstanding community college professional is not simply his technical expertise, but the purpose behind his work. He understands that every failed integration, inaccessible textbook, delayed course migration, or technology barrier ultimately affects a student trying to succeed in a class. His commitment is not to technology for its own sake, but to creating systems and supports that remove barriers and promote student success.

Some of the most important work at a community college is also some of the least visible, and Brandon’s work is a perfect example. Thousands of students and hundreds of faculty members may never realize how many hours go into migrating courses, repairing integrations, resolving digital textbook issues, or ensuring critical systems are ready when classes begin. They simply know the tools they depend on work when they need them. Brandon represents the very best of community college staff: a professional whose expertise helps others succeed, whose work strengthens the institution, and whose commitment to students is evident in every problem he works to solve.”

Hawkeye Community College

Outstanding Faculty Award: Mike Herring

“‘A teacher excels when they show a student how to learn, rather than simply dispensing information to the student.’

This is the teaching philosophy of Hawkeye Biology instructor, Mike Herring, Doctor of Chiropractic Medicine. For 14 years, Professor Herring has taught anatomy and physiology to hundreds of students by focusing on engagement and empathy. Professor Herring approaches classes with positivity and routinely asks for student feedback to help guide his teaching. Using innovative teaching strategies, he adapts his lessons to help striving strugglers, encourage eager learners and to challenge high achievers. Always willing to try new ways to engage students, Professor Herring was the first adopter of supplemental instruction on campus, boosting the retention and persistence of his students by 20%. Add to that, fellow faculty often model his teaching strategies, leading to growing success for students preparing for transfer or heading into health fields and the workforce.”

Outstanding Staff Award: Constance Grimm

“Millions of Words. Millions of Dollars. Countless Lives Changed.

Behind every successful grant is a story—one carefully crafted word at a time.

Over the course of her career, Constance has written millions of words that have helped secure millions of dollars in funding. But her work is about much more than writing grants. She turns ideas into opportunities, builds partnerships, and helps create programs that change students’ lives. Hawkeye Community College is fortunate to have her as a leader, grant expert, and champion for our students and community.

With more than 25 years of experience in grants, fund development, and leadership, Constance currently oversees a $35.8 million grant portfolio. Her work includes federal, state, foundation, and corporate funding. She guides projects from the first proposal through budgeting, reporting, compliance, and closeout. Her knowledge and leadership have helped Hawkeye successfully manage increasingly complex grants while building strong partnerships along the way.

Constance’s impact reaches well beyond Hawkeye. She is recognized as a leader in grant development across Iowa. Most recently, she successfully authored the Iowa STRONG (Systems, Training, and Resources for Opportunity, Navigation and Growth) grant on behalf of all 15 Iowa community colleges.

Iowa STRONG is designed to prepare Iowa community colleges to offer short-term, industry-focused training eligible for the new Workforce Pell Grant program. The $10.8 million project will bring together 15 community colleges, two state agencies, 44 employer partners, and six local Workforce Development Areas. Constance and her team will provide the operational and financial leadership needed to manage this large statewide effort.

The size of this project is impressive, but what is most impressive is what it means for students. Iowa STRONG can help more Iowans access short-term training, gain skills, and move into good-paying jobs. Constance understands that behind every grant dollar is a person whose life can be changed.

Constance is also a leader who invests in people. She develops and supports her staff, helping them grow their skills and confidence as grant professionals. Her team, affectionately known as the “Grant Gals,” works hard together and celebrates together. Through team meetings, morale-building activities, and outings, Constance has created a team culture built on trust, teamwork, and success.

During Constance’s time at Hawkeye, grants have grown significantly. Her leadership has improved proposal quality, strengthened partnerships, reduced turnaround time, and supported successful projects long after the grant is awarded.

To Constance, it is never just about winning a grant.

It is about what that grant makes possible.

It is about giving students new opportunities, helping employers build their workforce, and strengthening Iowa communities. It is about Hawkeye’s commitment to every student, every opportunity, and every future.

Constance truly exemplifies what it means to be an Outstanding Staff member.”

Indian Hills Community College

Outstanding Faculty Award: Heidi Munsell

“For more than 25 years, Heidi Munsell has been a leader in science education, serving as an early adopter of online learning and developing some of the first online science courses offered within Iowa community colleges. She continues to enhance curriculum across multiple science disciplines and employs creative, evidence-based teaching strategies, including her highly effective “”Draw It to Know It”” approach, which helps students master complex anatomical structures and physiological processes.

Heidi regularly collaborates across academic disciplines, particularly with health sciences faculty, to ensure students are well prepared for success in their programs and future careers. Her ability to connect foundational science concepts to real-world applications strengthens student learning and supports program outcomes across the college.

Beyond the classroom, Heidi is a trusted advisor and mentor. As a Phi Theta Kappa advisor, she provides exceptional guidance to students navigating transfer pathways and career opportunities in fields ranging from engineering and medicine to allied health and forensic science. Her extensive knowledge and personalized advising have helped countless students achieve their educational goals.

Heidi’s impact also extends to her colleagues. She has mentored new faculty in instructional strategies, classroom management, assessment, and student engagement, contributing to a culture of excellence and continuous improvement within her department. She is a leader at the state level with her science discipline colleagues.”

Outstanding Staff Award: Shelle Harvey

“Shelle Harvey has served Indian Hills Community College as Executive Assistant to the President and Board Secretary since 2013 prior to that she was Executive Assistant to the Vice President of Academics and been with Indian Hills since 2000. Ms. Harvey has played a prominent role in the overall academic functions of Indian Hills throughout her career. She serves as the Curriculum Management Assistant on the IHCC Academic Standards Committee. In that role, she works with faculty, program directors, academic deans, and the vice president to carefully and thoroughly review and update IHCC courses and programs. Shelle is considered one of the most efficient and effective Indian Hills employees due to her work-ethic and ability to get work done accurately.

As Board Secretary, Shelle interacts with IHCC’s Trustees helping them prepare for monthly board meetings, organizing trips to the Community Colleges for Iowa and ACCT Conferences. She is respected and trusted by the Board with all of her duties and upholds them with great integrity.

In addition to her formal duties, Shelle is always open to take on additional responsibilities to assist the college. She has regularly volunteered to staff the Welcome Center, the Don & Dee Pettengill Wellness Center, and has worked the scores table at Warrior Basketball games for years. Shelle believes in the mission of Indian Hills Community College and the life-changing opportunities it presents our students. ”

Iowa Central Community College

Outstanding Faculty Award: Rob Hepperle

“Rob approaches each day with humility, professionalism, and an unwavering commitment to student success. Despite his accomplishments and expertise, he remains grounded and focused on serving others rather than seeking recognition for himself.

His strong work ethic is evident in everything he does. He consistently goes above and beyond to ensure students receive the knowledge, skills, and support they need to succeed both in the classroom and in their future careers.

One of his most remarkable qualities is his consistency. Regardless of the challenges or demands of the day, he maintains the same positive demeanor, calm presence, and professional attitude. This steady leadership creates an environment where students feel supported, respected, and motivated to do their best.”

Outstanding Staff Award: Brandon Bush

“Brandon Bush exemplifies what it means to be an outstanding staff member at Iowa Central Community College. As Assistant Director of Student life, Brandon has built a campus culture where students don’t just attend college — they belong to it.

Brandon created and operates the Programming & Activities Club (PAC), a student-led group that supports the Student Life Team by generating event ideas, gathering student feedback, and helping execute programming across campus. PAC directly advances Iowa Central’s mission of providing quality educational opportunities both inside and outside the classroom, and it has given students a formal voice in shaping their own campus experience — turning student life from something done for students into something built with them.

Brandon is a sought-after member of committees across campus, valued for his willingness to dive in and help wherever he’s needed. His colleagues know that if a project needs energy, follow-through, and a student-first perspective, Brandon is the person to bring to the table.

Brandon is easy to find on campus — usually on stage hosting BINGO nights packed with 400+ students, cracking a dad joke as he goes, giving students a reason to laugh. He’s also a fixture at athletic events, organizing student activities that draw big crowds and give Iowa Central’s athletes the energized atmosphere they deserve. Other days, he’s the one with a ping pong paddle or pool cue in hand, trading friendly trash talk with students as laughter and banter echo through the building. Just as often, he’s walking across campus with a student at his side, personally connecting them to whatever resource they need. Students gravitate to Brandon because he treats their success — academic, social, and personal — as his own responsibility.

When it comes to Brandon Bush, it is all about the students. Everything he does is in service of making sure they have a great experience at Iowa Central — one that sets them up to go on and live better lives.”

Iowa Lakes Community College

Outstanding Faculty Award: Annette Lindquist

“Since its inception in 2011, Annette Lindquist has been instrumental in the success of the Veterinary Technician Program at Iowa Lakes Community College, working with three different veterinarian program coordinators over the last 15 years to keep the program moving forward. Through countless early mornings and late nights, Annette has worked to make sure that students have had the best possible environment for successful learning. From designing curriculum to establishing CLOs, PLOs, and ILOs, to continuous assessment and AVMA Accreditation site visits, she has kept student learning at the forefront.

Annette has affected countless students over her 15 years, not just teaching Veterinary Technology core principles and skills, but also helping our students become better people so that they would leave Iowa Lakes prepared to be successful in their careers. This is evident in site visit observations for students doing internships as well as when graduates come back to visit. There is no doubt that those students benefited in meaningful and successful ways from working with Annette. Not only has her dedication enriched our students, but her work has also advanced the veterinary profession, the practices they work in, and the patients they treat.

There are not enough words to express how thankful Iowa Lakes Community College is for the dedication Annette has shown for the college, the Veterinary Technician Program, the Veterinary profession, and, most importantly, her students.”

Outstanding Staff Award: Kari Hampe

“Kari Hampe began working in the Iowa Lakes Continuing Education program as an Adult Basic Education instructor in 1984, serving students with disabilities, and as a GET tester. In 1998, she moved to the Special Needs Department as Coordinator for Project Learning, which provided adult students with the opportunity to learn independent / education skills. In 2001, Kari became the Secondary Programs Coordinator (later renamed High School Partnerships), over which Kari now serves as Dean.

One key to Kari’s success are the relationships she has developed with principals, superintendents, business and industry partners, and other stakeholders in our region in order to develop the best programming possible for the high schools we work with. Kari always has the students in mind when making decisions and developing new programs — understanding that successful high school partnerships are built on trust, communication, and a genuine commitment to working together for the benefit of students. Because of this, Kari takes the time to listen to the needs and concerns of our high school partners and works collaboratively to find solutions that strengthen the relationship between Iowa Lakes and our area schools.

Kari is also a valuable leader across the Iowa Lakes campus community, providing experience, insight, and guidance on numerous college committees. To name a few, Kari represents ILCC on the statewide Guided Pathways steering committee, serves as a Pillar 2 co-chair in Iowa Lakes efforts to adopt Guided Pathways, co-leads our “Lakers Lead” leadership development cohort each year (for staff who want to increase their leadership skills), and helped design the ELEVATE Leadership Workshop (to increase leadership skills for our supervisors). Colleagues enjoy working with Kari because of her cooperative and encouraging style: working collaboratively by seeking and incorporating others’ perspectives; bringing out the strengths in other team members; providing growth opportunities and professional development to her team members, encouraging them to take risks and say “Yes” to new opportunities, and advocating for them as they pursue continuous improvement in their areas of responsibility; generously giving colleagues credit rather than seeking it for herself; and looking at the big picture, seeing what needs to be done, providing thoughtful input, and helping to move projects forward to successful completion.

Kari leads by example, demonstrating professionalism, integrity, compassion, and a strong work ethic in every interaction. She steps in wherever she is needed, takes on additional responsibilities, and puts in the extra time necessary to get the job done. Kari is highly respected. She represents the very best of what it means to be a community college leader and partner. ”

Iowa Valley Community College District

Outstanding Faculty Award: Doug Curren

“Doug Curren has served as the Powerline Technician Faculty at Iowa Valley Community College for the past six years. During his time here, he has consistently advocated for and advanced the Powerline Technician Program with the ultimate goal of preparing the students to be successful out in the field. Safety is always a top priority in everything that he does with his students. He has made adjustments to curriculum to meet the industry needs while also navigating the complexity of working with a wide range of students’ abilities. Doug is a faculty member that I can always count on, not because he will always say yes and agree with me but because I know he will be completely upfront and honest with me so I can fully understand the big picture and how a decision might impact the students and the industry.

The Powerline Technician Program is highly sought after by students every year. Evidence of this comes from the long waiting list each year of students that are wanting to start the program. I believe that is a direct result of who Doug is and how he chooses to show up each day. He has created a great reputation for the program, and the graduates do great with job placement. He has strong relationships with industry partners. He’s resourceful, even with a very costly program. He always treats everyone, students, co-workers, and community members with respect.

It is my privilege to give my full support and recommendation for Doug Curren to be named the Outstanding Faculty Award recipient! Thank you, Doug for who you are and all that you do for the students at Iowa Valley Community College District!”

Outstanding Staff Award: Cindy Uhlenberg

“If we were to make a movie about Ellsworth, Cindy is the person whose name may not be on the poster in the biggest letters, but those who know the college would immediately notice if her name was missing from the credits. She makes sure everything runs well behind the scenes so that the main characters can shine. Whether it’s the administrative team, instructors, coaches, or students, she is there for all of us to support us and make our jobs easier. She knows everything and everyone, she problem-solves, she organizes, she volunteers, and she figures it out if she doesn’t have an immediate answer. She is Super Cin and she makes the best popcorn!”

Iowa Western Community College

Outstanding Faculty Award: Keith Hale

“Keith Hale has served Iowa Western Community College (IWCC) for over 7 years. He is currently an Associate Professor of Musical Theater. In 2025 he received the College’s Living Our Mission Award for Commitment. As demonstrated by the award title, Keith has put in countless hours and long nights rehearsing students and preparing them for their performances on stage. He sets high expectations for his students because he knows a career in the arts entails hard work, dedication, and long hours. In turn, his students rise to the occasion. Since the inception of the Musical Theater program at IWCC, Keith has taken marketing seriously. He understands that show business is a business, and a production is only successful with an audience. Since he has been with the college, ticket sales and performance turnout have continued to increase each year. The community is enthusiastic to support his students and appreciate the hard work they have turned out. These results are directly correlated to Keith’s enthusiasm and relentless work ethic. He truly cares about his students and their success at Iowa Western and beyond the classroom.”

Outstanding Staff Award: Andrea Huckabee

“Andrea Huckabee has served Iowa Western Community College for over five years. In 2025 she received the College’s Difference Maker Award for making noticeable impact on college operations. She is a leader who her colleagues turn to as a sounding board for decisions. Staying cool, calm, and collected, she has led major initiatives in academics, including the implementation of scheduling software, piloting the use of Colleague to generate faculty course loads, and revising academic processes. In 2025 she stepped in as the Interim Dean over the Social Sciences and Business while also keeping the STEAM division operating smoothly. She has been instrumental in guiding the dental assistant and dental hygiene faculty toward CODA reaccreditation and launching the Paramedic and Fire Science program. The faculty appreciate her keen ability to listen, objectivity in decision making, and level headedness. After a reorganization in Academics summer 2026, Andrea has just stepped into the role of supervising Institutional Effectiveness, in addition to the STEM division.”

She consistently goes above and beyond what is expected, creating an environment where students feel supported, valued, and empowered to achieve their goals.

What sets Shawna apart is her student-centered approach. She is deeply invested in the success of every student, not just those enrolled in her classes. She consistently works to ensure students receive the support they need while helping faculty and staff create inclusive learning environments.

Under Amanda’s leadership, the Accommodation Services team has expanded professional development opportunities that increase awareness and understanding of disability-related issues. Her efforts have helped foster a more accessible and inclusive campus for all students.

Amanda’s leadership has also improved student access to accommodations. Through proactive outreach and strong partnerships, her team has increased the number of students who have accommodations in place before classes begin, helping students start each semester prepared for success. I cannot think of a more deserving recipient of this recognition. ”

Outstanding Staff Award: Tracey Evans

“It is with great enthusiasm that we nominate Tracey Evans from Southwestern Community College for the Community Colleges for Iowa Staff Member of the Year Award. Tracey has served at Southwestern for almost 31 years and has been a strong advocate for students and staff members during this time. She is a vital team member to the college and has helped shaped Southwestern Community College into the great community that we have today.

What began as a part time position for Tracey turned into a passion and love for Southwestern. Tracey has an unmatched commitment to the college and has taken on several roles in whatever capacity was needed at the time from coaching, logistics coordinator, bus driver, part-time learning resource center staff and even building and grounds. As a former student-athlete for Southwestern, Tracey is a strong advocate for the student athlete experience and has been a staple in the athletic department for her entire career. She has also served as our long-standing activities coordinator.

As the assistant athletic director, Tracey is responsible for overseeing the compliance operations of the department and assisting with all other administrative functions, including fundraising. Tracey is responsible for helping implement and grow the department’s annual athletic fundraiser, including a live and silent auction, as well as the annual golf tournament. Between those two events, Tracey has played a key role in raising approximately $750,000 for the athletic department during her tenure. This money has directly gone to impact the student-athletes’ experience through new equipment, facilities, and student athlete essentials.

In addition to fundraising, Tracey is really a jack of all trades. She has stepped into coach multiple sports when needed, driven teams to competitions when other bus drivers were not available, and served in a variety of positions during game days. It is easy to say that without Tracey many things would not have happened at SWCC! More importantly than any amount of money raised or games coached is Tracey’s personal impact on thousands of student-athletes’ lives. She is many students’ mom away from home. She will give them advice, a hug, or a firm talk, if the situation calls for it. She is someone students can count on and rely on to help them through all of the ups and downs that college students face.

Tracey is also responsible for all student activities on campus. Through the activities she plans, she truly makes campus feel like home for many students. She has been able to adjust and adapt to the students’ needs over the years and works hard to plan events that students want to attend. She was instrumental in initiating Southwestern’s annual SWCC Week and Pay it Forward Week. These are two longstanding traditions that students look forward to every year and have become imbedded in the campus culture.

Tracey’s legacy at Southwestern will be felt for years to come. She stays well-connected with alumni and retirees long after their days at the college. Her time at Southwestern has never been about a job or a paycheck, but about the lives she can impact. She has done this so well and we are so thankful to have her as part of our family. With this said, we are so excited to have her represent Southwestern as our Staff Member of the Year!”
