Equity Lens: Pride, Data & Access

June is Pride Month. The US Census reports that the LGBTQ population is a historically undercounted community. It was not until 2019 that the US Census started reporting data on same-sex households even though in a Gallup poll conducted in February 2022, it estimated that 7.2% of U.S. adults are gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, or identify outside the heteronormative boxes. PRRI (Public Religion Research Institute) estimates that 10% of the U.S. population is LGBTQ, and in May 2022, Pew estimated that approximately 1.6% of U.S. adults identify as transgender or nonbinary.

Recently, a Forbes’ article shared data on how Americans really feel about LGBTQ issues. Regardless of where we stand on LGBTQ issues on an individual level, Iowa’s community colleges have always prided ourselves in being accessible to all, but more importantly, welcoming to all. Campus Pride Index sets the bar in creating safer, more LGBTQ-friendly learning environments, and more inclusive campus communities. Check out the top 2 ranking LGBTQ-friendly community colleges: San Antonio College and Bergen Community College.
