Iowa Community College Students to Receive Recognition

Posted on February 23, 2024 at 12:40 PM by Emily Shields

On Monday, February 26, 2024, Community Colleges for Iowa will host an event honoring the 2024 Phi Theta Kappa All-Iowa Academic Team. This team includes 81 transfer and workforce students from across Iowa’s 15 community colleges. These students are members of the Phi Theta Kappa International College Honor Society and were selected after being nominated by their colleges for their intellectual rigor, academic achievement, leadership, and civic growth, and for extending their educational experiences to better themselves, their colleges, and their surrounding communities.

“These students represent not only the best and brightest students at Iowa’s community colleges, but also the diversity of background and experience,” said Emily Shields, Executive Director of Community Colleges for Iowa. “Their achievements demonstrate the value of community colleges to communities and the state.”

The students will be recognized in a ceremony that begins at 5:30 p.m. on Monday at the Curate Event Center in Des Moines. All-State Academic Team members are also eligible for selection on the All-USA Academic Team. These students receive national recognition and a $1,000 scholarship. Winners will be announced at the awards ceremony.

Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) recognizes the academic achievement of college students and provides opportunities for its members to grow as scholars and leaders. Established in 1918, Phi Theta Kappa has a presence on nearly 1,300 campuses in 11 nations. The American Association of Community Colleges (AACC) recognized Phi Theta Kappa as the official honor society for two-year colleges in 1929. More than 3.8 million students have been inducted since 1918, with approximately 250,000 active members currently in the U.S., making Phi Theta Kappa a true catalyst among students and colleges.
