12:00 pm          Navigating Current Issues in Higher Education Legal Affairs - Peter Fagen & Lauren Rubio of Fagen, Friedman, & Fulfrost LLP (F3 Law, Presenting Sponsor)

This session will cover some of the latest legal issues impacting higher education in general, and community college trustees in particular. This session will specifically focus on free speech, including that of students, leaders, and trustees and will touch on issues that are quickly becoming more critical such as artificial intelligence. Gain insights from legal experts on how to proactively address these challenges and mitigate risks and leave with knowledge and strategies to effectively navigate legal affairs.

1:45 pm            Understanding the Roles and Responsibilities of Community College Trustees and Presidents - Dr. Kim Beatty, President & Ellen Martin, Trustee of Metropolitan Community College, Kansas City

This session will focus on the roles and responsibilities of community college trustees and presidents. This session will explore the distinct yet complementary duties of these leadership positions, focusing on governance, policy-making, and strategic planning. Learn best practices for fostering productive relationships, effective communication, and collaboration. Through real-world examples and practical strategies, participants will gain a deeper understanding of how to enhance their leadership effectiveness and improve governance practices within their institutions.

This session will offer insights and discussion on how boards can effectively support community college presidents throughout their tenure. From onboarding new presidents to sustaining long-term success and planning for succession, this session will provide strategies for fostering strong, supportive relationships. Learn how to tailor support to the unique needs of presidents at various stages, ensuring they have the guidance and resources necessary for institutional success.
